I am feeling GREAT!!

Hey everybody!!!

I am back and feeling brand new!!! This morning I had my first dose of real pain, but soon after my meds kicked in and ~BINGO~ problem solved. My favorite part of recovery right now is my lung excersizes, i need to excersize my lungs to avoid developing pnemonia. That certain excersize would be~BUBBLES~!!!!! I love to invite over my neighbors and we all blow bubbles for hours!! It's bunches of fun!! Thanks to everyone keeping updated and love you all!!

Thursday, June 12, a.m.

Talked to Brian this morning. Doctor visited and said he would take out all Chelsea's tubes (IV, oxygen, catheter) so I'm sure that will make her feel much better. They were also taking her to physical therapy for walking at 9am.

Rough night on the pediatrics floor though. A new patient was admitted and Brian said they heard screaming and yelling all night.

Doc didn't like the idea of letting Trixie come in, so she will have to wait until she gets home to see her dog. She's strong, she can do it. Besides, she took a 200 page photo album with her with mostly dog pictures!

Day after surgery

Chelsea was in a bit more pain this morning since the anesthesia wore off. She was getting morphine every 2 hours and was given a valium in between morphine doses. So that zonked her out for several hours.

Highlights of the day were being taken to xray to get a chest xray. The doc worked very close to her lungs, so he wanted to make sure everything is ok. Plus laying around with no activity can lead to pneumonia.

The other highlight was sitting up with the assistance of two nurses, swinging her legs over the bed, standing up and moving into the recliner. She stayed there for about 1 1/2 hours. Said her toes felt numb. Once back in her bed, the numbness went away.

She was also visited by the doctor at 6:30am. She told him "thank you for making me straight." He replied "no one ever thanks me, especially the day after surgery, you just made my day!"

She's been surprisingly polite to all the nurses. She thanks them constantly. She also reminds them that it's time to empty or refill her fluids, reminds them or me that she needs to do her breathing exercises and so on. I only wish she could remember her chores that well!

Brian will spend the night tonight and I get to go home and get a good nights sleep in my own bed! Chelsea was awakened every 2 hours through the night for vitals, meds, etc.
Long day Tuesday. We arrived at Community North at 5:30. At about 6 they took Chelsea in to get her into a gown and get her IV started. After that we were allowed in to be with her. She was very nervous and crying saying she didn't want to do this. They gave her an anti-anxiety med thru her IV. That calmed her down a bit, then they gave her a little more and we noticed a difference because she started to relax and look drowsy. They took her to the OR at 7:10.

At about 8:30 the nurse came out to tell us that Dr. Biel wasn't going to take bone from her hip, He had removed enough bone from the 3 ribs to use to fuse her spine. That was good news because it means only 1 incision to heal and 1 scar.

At 11 am they came to get us to consult with the doctor since he had just finished her surgery. She did very well. He had planned to fuse vertebra T4 to L2, but only had to do T5 to L1. The fewer lumbar vertebra they fuse, the better, because that's where you bend. So that was more good news. We asked the doctor what her curve was now and he said 15 degrees! It was 70 and we expected a 50% or better correction! We got the better!!

She was in recovery for quite a while then they got her to her room about 1:30. She is in Pediatrics room 1212. She is still very groggy, but alert enough to ask what her curve was, tell me to take a picture of her (she's documenting all this), she asked about her hip and was generally looking good. She can't have anything to eat or drink until she passes gas and that bothers her. She usually eats all the time. But mostly she is just drifting in and out and asking questions about all the equipment and stuff.

The doctor will be in tomorrow morning early (6:30am). He said today that they would get her up in a chair tomorrow and walking after that.

She's already asked the nurses twice if Trixie can come visit her. We've gotten conflicting answers on that one, so we will have to ask the doctor.

Thank you all for your prayers, thoughts and wishes!
